Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology will reportedly establish a research and development center and its international headquarters in the Hong Kong Science Park.
CATL will ink a deal with Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks today to set up the CATL Hong Kong Technology Innovation R&D Center and its global HQ, local media Ta Kung Pao reported on the same day. The pair will jointly promote the development of the local green technology ecosystem and the achievement of the zero carbon emissions goal.
CATL's installed capacity surged 51 percent to 203.8 gigawatt hours in the 10 months ended Oct. 31 from a year earlier, maintaining its position as a global leader, figures published by South Korea's SNE Research showed yesterday. Its global market share climbed 0.1 percentage points to 36.9 percent from the first nine months of this year, remaining the only battery supplier with a share of over 35 percent.
Starting with Tesla, Ningde-base CATL has gone beyond the Chinese market, with its installed capacity in markets outside China nearly doubling in the first 10 months of this year from a year ago, SNE Research noted.
CATL's batteries are installed on Chinese electric vehicles, including GAC Group's Aion Y and Geely Automobile Holdings' Zeekr 001, and on the autos of foreign carmakers such as Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y, BMW's iX and Mercedes-Benz's EQS.
CATL is also considering a second listing in Hong Kong after going public in Shenzhen in June 2018, according to Reuters' International Financing Review, citing insiders. It held internal and external discussions with financial advisers about the potential listing, which could take place as early as next year, two insiders said.
