On 10 February 2025, Trina Solar, a global leader in photovoltaic technology, announced that it has filed patent infringement lawsuits against CSI Solar Co., Ltd. and Canadian Solar Manufacturing (Changshu) Inc. in a Chinese court, asking the two companies to jointly compensate the plaintiffs for the losses caused by the infringement of Trina Solar’s two patents in the total amount of 1.058 billion yuan, as well as to pay reasonable litigation costs.
The cases, which relate to solar cells and modules and their manufacturing methods, have been filed and are pending trial. Trina Solar is asking the two defendants to immediately cease and desist from infringing, manufacturing and selling, and to immediately destroy all inventory of the allegedly infringing product, as well as the equipment and related moulds used exclusively for the production of the allegedly infringing product.
In 2024, Trina Solar filed a lawsuit against Canadian Solar in a US court alleging patent infringement over unspecified tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) solar cell technology. In October 2024, Trina Solar filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) alleging that Runergy and Adani Green Energy improperly imported and sold projects that infringed its TOPCon solar cell patents.
In March, Singapore-based Maxeon filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Canadian Solar in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Maxeon previously filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Canadian Solar in Japan in 2020. In the lawsuit, Maxeon alleged that Canadian Solar Japan infringed Maxeon’s Japanese Patent No. JP6642841B2 relating to its shingled solar modules. The two companies reached a settlement in April 2022.
