Chinese suppliers of batteries for electric vehicles have built on their global dominance, with six ranking among the world's top 10 last year, while Contemporary Amperex Technology spearheaded the list for the eighth consecutive year driven by robust growth in the domestic market.
Use of CATL's batteries in EVs jumped 32 percent to 339.3 gigawatt-hours last year from the year before, according to figures released by South Korean battery and energy research firm SNE Research on Feb. 11. The Ningde-based company's global market share reached 38 percent.
BYD ranked second with a 17.2 percent market share worldwide. The combined share of the six Chinese battery makers in the top 10 rose to 67.1 percent from 63.4 percent, while that of their South Korean rivals LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI dropped to 18.5 percent from 23.1 percent.
Japan's Panasonic, a major supplier to Tesla, saw its global market share fall to 3.9 percent from 6.1 percent.
EV battery use worldwide surged 27 percent to 894.4 GWh last year from the prior one, backed by a rise in electric car sales, which jumped 26 percent to around 17.63 million units. China's NEV market outpaced the global, with production soaring 34 percent to 12.89 million and sales 36 percent to 12.87 million units.
