Shanghai Electric has entered into two significant agreements with Oman’s Mawarid Group and Abu Dhabi Future Energy(Masdar)in Saudi Arabia to advance clean energy initiatives in the Middle East.
The partnership with Mawarid focuses on wind power development in Oman, covering the supply of wind turbines, technology sharing, and the establishment of a local manufacturing facility. This collaboration aims to harness Oman’s wind resources, build a regional supply chain, and support economic growth. The project is expected to diversify Oman’s energy sources, promoting sustainable development and strengthening technical cooperation between China and Arab nations.
Wu Lei,chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, stated:“The Omani Government’s forward-looking Vision 2040 and Green Hydrogen Strategy align with Shanghai Electric’s strategic development goals. We are eager to use this project as an opportunity to integrate advanced technologies and high-quality products in the new energy sector with Oman’s resource strengths and market potential.”
In Saudi Arabia,Shanghai Electric signed an agreement with Masdar to develop the 2GW Sadawi photovoltaic(PV)project, the company’s largest solar engineering, procurement, and construction endeavor to date.Spanning 40km²,the project is projected to produce over six billion kilowatt-hours annually, enough to power 700,000 households and cut carbon emissions by three million tonnes. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Programme, leveraging the region’s abundant sunlight with advanced PV technology.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said:“Masdar attaches great importance to its partnership with Shanghai Electric and looks forward to further deepening cooperation with them in wind power, photovoltaics, energy storage, and other fields in the future to jointly promote the transformation of the global energy structure.”
The Sadawi PV project supports Saudi Arabia’s goals of economic diversification and reduced reliance on fossil fuels, while positioning Shanghai Electric for growth in the Middle East solar market. The agreements reflect a shared commitment to sustainable energy solutions, fostering regional development and environmental benefits through innovative technology.
