As of the end of August,China’s first large-scale coalbed methane field,the Daning-Jixian block in northern Shanxi Province,reached a cumulative production of more than 4 billion cubic meters,setting a new domestic record.The announcement was made by its developer,PetroChina Coalbed Methane Co.,Ltd.This milestone highlights the increasing importance of coalbed methane as an energy source in China’s resource structure.
Coalbed methane,an unconventional natural gas,is regarded as a clean and strategic energy resource.Its development and utilization bring multiple benefits,including reducing mining risks,lowering greenhouse gas emissions,and helping to ease natural gas supply pressures.These characteristics position coalbed methane as a key contributor to energy security and environmental protection goals.
Shanxi Province has abundant coalbed methane reserves.Estimates indicate that about 8.31 trillion cubic meters of coalbed methane resources are located at depths of less than 2,000 meters in the region,accounting for nearly one-third of China’s total reserves.This geological advantage makes Shanxi a central area for the country’s coalbed methane development and production.
The Daning-Jixian block currently produces more than 6.5 million cubic meters of gas per day.This represents a growth of over 50 percent compared with the same period last year,reflecting strong momentum in production expansion.Such growth also demonstrates the potential of advanced technologies and enhanced operations in unlocking unconventional gas resources.
Located on the eastern edge of the Ordos Basin,the Daning-Jixian block’s coalbed methane resources are buried at an average depth of 2,130 meters.The total estimated resources of the field are about 600 billion cubic meters.With sustained investment and technological innovation,the field is expected to continue increasing its contribution to domestic natural gas supply.
The record-setting cumulative output at the Daning-Jixian block marks a significant step in China’s energy development efforts.As production continues to expand,coalbed methane is expected to play a growing role in diversifying energy sources,ensuring supply stability,and supporting cleaner energy use across the country.
