The Tillbridge Solar Project, located east of Gainsborough,Lincolnshire, has received final approval, enabling Tribus Clean Energy and Recurrent Energy to commence development. The project, spanning a 1,400-hectare site, secures a 500 MW grid connection, making it the largest solar project approved in the UK to date.Approximately 900 hectares will host the photovoltaic plant, with 500 hectares remaining undeveloped.
This marks the 17th major renewable energy project approved under the UK’s nationally significant infrastructure project(NSIP)framework since July 2024.Tillbridge joins other large-scale solar initiatives near Gainsborough, including the 480 MW West Burton,500 MW Gate Burton, and 600 MW Cottam Solar projects, collectively contributing nearly 2.1 GW of capacity within an 8 km radius of the rural town, home to about 21,000 residents. Some local groups have expressed concerns about the use of agricultural land for these developments.
The approvals align with the UK government’s goal to source 95%of electricity from clean energy by 2030,targeting 45 GW of solar capacity. As of August 2025,the UK had 19.6 GW of installed solar capacity, underscoring the need for projects like Tillbridge to meet ambitious clean energy targets.
“We’re committed to continue our work with local communities to ensure the project is delivered in a way that respects and works with the area,”said Tribus Clean Energy CEO Luke Murray in a press release, highlighting the project’s move into the construction phase.
“[We will]develop the project in a way that gives back to the environment around it,and supports the local communities it is rooted in,”said Keith McKinney,General Manager,UK&Ireland at Recurrent Energy.
The Tillbridge Solar Project strengthens the UK’s renewable energy landscape, supporting grid stability and the transition to sustainable power sources while addressing local and environmental considerations.
