Chinese state-owned uranium miner China National Uranium Co debuted on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Wednesday, becoming the first A-share listed company in the field of natural uranium.Industry analysts said that this is a milestone in China's nuclear industry,as the company's listing is expected to notably increase China's supply of uranium resources.
The shares surged more than 280 percent on the first trading day to close at about 68 yuan($9.62).
Taking the IPO as a new starting point,China National Uranium said that it will further consolidate its strategic position as the"granary of nuclear power,"continuously enhance the national strength of high-level sci-tech self-reliance in uranium exploration, and further solidify the domestic natural uranium supply guarantee system, according to a press release posted on the company's official WeChat account on Wednesday.
The company will further deeply participate in project cooperation in global natural uranium resources, providing solid resource guarantees for the development of nuclear power in China and even the world,it said.
As an important component of China's nuclear industry system,China National Uranium Co mainly engages in core businesses including natural uranium mining and smelting, sales and trade, and the comprehensive utilization of radioactive associated minerals, according to the company.
The company has mastered multiple core technologies for the exploration of uranium resources. Its"National No.1 Uranium"demonstration project produced its first barrel of uranium within one year after construction was launched, setting a new speed record in the construction of natural uranium facilities,it said.
"As a nationally important strategic mineral resource, natural uranium serves as the foundation for nuclear energy development. As a'main force'in the development of uranium in China, the proceeds of China National Uranium Co's IPO will be directly used for domestic natural uranium projects and comprehensive utilization projects of mineral resources, which will effectively guarantee domestic uranium supply,"Wang Guoqing, research director at the Beijing Lange Steel Information Research Center, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
The geographical distribution of global uranium resources is extremely uneven, and resource reserves are highly concentrated in a few countries. The world's proven uranium resources are mainly concentrated in countries including Australia,Kazakhstan, and Canada. The overall scale of China's nuclear power ranks first in the world. In the next 15 years,China's domestic demand for natural uranium is calculated to increase by three times, state broadcaster CCTV News reported on Wednesday.
