1. The China-built world's largest reverse osmosis seawater desalination project has recently completed a 30-day reliability operation test in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The plant complemented with solar power can produce 324 mln m3 of freshwater annually for nearly 1 mln local residents.
2. China stepped up its greening efforts in 2023 with 3.998 million hectares of forest planted. The figure was higher than the 3.83 million hectares of afforestation seen in 2022, according to a report of the National Greening Commission.
3. Xpeng Motors has been asking auto dealerships to stock vehicles in advance to smooth deliveries and enhance efficiency, the Chinese electric car startup confirmed today. Xpeng is requiring dealers to reserve half of its targeted sales volume every month, according to Yicai citing Market sources. The Guangzhou-based firm previously announced a goal to sell 280,000 units this year. If all dealers follow the requirement, the carmaker will ship 140,000 cars at least.
4. The first electric car developed by Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies and the new energy vehicle arm of auto manufacturer BAIC Group will go on show at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition later this month, according to an internal document seen by Yicai.
5. China's Xiaomi said on Tuesday it will start deliveries of its first electric vehicle (EV) model SU7 this month, venturing into the world's largest auto market amid a brutal price war. The smartphone maker, China's fifth-largest, said in a Weibo post it has 59 stores in 29 cities nationwide that will take orders. A launch event is scheduled for March 28 when the new EV's sticker tag is expected to be announced.
6. According to data from the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance on March 11, China's total output of power and other batteries in Feb. was 43.6 GWh, a MoM decrease of 33.1% and a YoY decrease of 3.6%. The total cumulative output of China Power and other batteries from Jan. to Feb. was 108.8 GWh, which shows a cumulative YoY increase of 29.5%. In Feb., China's power battery installed capacity was 18.0GWh, which is a YoY decrease of 18.1% and a MoM decrease of 44.4%. The cumulative installed volume of power batteries in China from Jan. to Feb. was 50.3 GWh, a cumulative YoY increase of 32.0%.
7. Two separate coal mine accidents have killed 12 people in China over the last 24 hours, state broadcaster CCTV reported, the latest incidents to plague the industry after the government recently revised mining safety legislation. An underground coal bunker owned by a firm in Zhongyang County, Shanxi province collapsed right before midnight on Monday, killing five people with two missing, CCTV said on Tuesday.
8. China on Tuesday finished the construction of Haiji-2 — Asia's highest and heaviest deepwater jacket — in south China's Zhuhai. With a height of 338.5m & weight of 37,000 tonnes, it signifies China's key progress in developing deep-sea large-scale offshore oil and gas equipment.
9. Zeekr plans to set up a unit in Thailand in the first half and will work with local dealers, Reuters reported today, citing a company insider. The Chinese EV maker is also partnering with dealers in Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines to start selling in these markets next quarter.
10. Exxon Mobil fulfilled from existing stock all its delivery contracts from its refinery in Port Jerome-Gravenchon in northern France since it was hit by a major fire on Monday, a spokesperson for the company said. The refinery's staff were working to assess the damage to one of two distillation towers of the oil refinery to see if and when it would be able to operate again after an emergency at the refinery was called off early on Tuesday, the spokesperson said.
