1. Cargo throughput via the ship locks of Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower project on the upper stream of the Yangtze River, has exceeded 100 million tonnes as of Sept 3 since the start of 2024, hitting the same milestone for 11 consecutive years, according to its operator.
2. Canada said on Tuesday it was considering a potential surtax on Chinese critical mineral products, batteries and parts, solar products, and semiconductors, a move which could prompt more retaliation from Beijing. Canada announced last month it would impose a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles and announced a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum from China.
3. The largest wind farm in the world's ultra-high altitude areas, at an average altitude of 4,650 meters in Nagqu, southwest China's Xizang, has generated over 86 million kWh of electricity since all units with a total installed capacity of 100 MW was connected to the grid in Dec 2023.
4. China's GCL Group has officially launched the construction of a 2.4 GWh pumped hydro storage plant in Jiande City, Zhejiang Province, billed as the largest single clean energy project invested and constructed by the group and the largest pumped storage project in East China to date. Located in the Linchang Town of Jiande City, Zhejiang Province, the GCL Pumped Storage Power Station is at the power consumption center of Zhejiang and close to Shanghai. With a total investment of around CNY12.5 billion ($1.76 billion), the project is expected to commence power generation before 2030.
5. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday there does not need to be a trade war between the EU and China, and the two sides should seek to find a compromise around planned tariffs. Sanchez made the remarks while speaking at an event at Mondragon Industrial Park in Kunshan, a city neighbouring Shanghai. He was addressing the European Commission's move to conduct an anti-subsidy investigation into EVs made in China and the EU weighing hefty tariffs.
6. A rumor -- later confirmed -- that CATL had suspended lithium production in Jiangxi sent shares of major lithium producers soaring, after the sector experienced a prolonged drop in prices due to overcapacity. In a widely circulated research note today, UBS analyst Sky Han's team said CATL has finally decided to suspend its Jiangxi lithium operations.
7. Inner Mongolia Energy Group has started constructing a large-scale new energy storage power station in the Ulan Buh Desert, the eighth-largest in China, to better harness new energy power for grid connection. Designed with a capacity of 605,000 kW, the project is the largest single energy storage power station under construction in the country. The energy storage station can help send a stable supply of electricity from photovoltaic power facilities to the grid.
8. Russia's Inter RAO expects its 2024 electricity exports to fall by 35% due to plummeting sales to China, Interfax news agency reported on Wednesday, citing a company's senior manager, in a downward revision of plans. Russia has been cutting electricity exports to China amid high demand for power in Russia's far eastern regions where low river water levels have limited production capabilities at hydro-electric power plants.
9. China's foreign trade has continued to demonstrate strong resilience, and the nation's enhanced export channels with emerging economies, coupled with ongoing support from its opening-up policies, will drive its economic growth throughout the year despite external challenges, government officials and experts said.
10. China's green energy projects in Africa have bolstered renewable energy capacity and consolidated South-South cooperation, said Mostafa Sherbiny, an Egyptian expert in sustainability and climate risk assessment. Sherbiny, also head of the Scientific Chair for Carbon Footprint and Sustainability at the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization, highlighted the importance of China's role in Africa's energy transformation.
