The Pentagon has updated a list of Chinese companies it says have ties to Chinese military, adding several major EV, battery and solar firms.
The Defense Department published an updated "1260H list" on Monday evening U.S. time. Companies placed on the roster face no immediate sanctions, but the designation can complicate access to U.S. government contracts and increase scrutiny from investors.
The list now includes BYD and NIO, CALB and EVE Energy, as well as Trina Solar and JA Solar.
Several of the companies pushed back against the designation, saying it would have little impact on their business operations and denying any military ties.
BYD rejected the designation as being without legitimate grounds, saying the listing would not affect its normal business operations.
NIO said the designation would have no impact on its vehicle business or securities trading, while pledging to engage with the U.S. Department of Defense.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the move, accusing the U.S. of overreaching on security matters to disadvantage Chinese commercial entities.
"We urge the U.S. to correct its wrongdoings and stop its groundless suppression of Chinese companies," ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in a regular briefing in Beijing on Tuesday. "China will take necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of Chinese enterprises."
