1. China's BYD, the world's biggest seller of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), will launch its cars in Indonesia next week, the company said on Tuesday. The launch comes amid efforts from Indonesia to accelerate the adoption of EVs in a bid to reduce emissions.
2. The world's 1st 10MW/80MWh CO2 energy storage facility has been successfully connected to the grid for power generation in Wuhu, E China's Anhui. The eco-friendly system can reach the maximum storage capacity of 1,000MWh class with a lifespan of over 30 years.
3. Over 7.7 million new energy passenger vehicles were sold in China last year, up 36% from the previous year, the China Passenger Car Association said yesterday. China's exports of such cars soared 72% to nearly 1.1 million in the period.
4. In Jan-Nov, global battery consumption for electric vehicles totaled 624.4 GWh, up 41.8% from 440.5 GWh in the same period last year, according to SNE Research. CATL installed 233.4 GWh of batteries from Jan to Nov, up 52.1% from 157.4 GWh in the same period last year. The Chinese power battery giant continued to rank first in the world with a 37.4% share, and remains the only battery supplier in the world with a market share of more than 30%.
5. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 1.4 million electric vehicles were sold in the U.S. in 2023. Today, the U.S. has close to 170,000 public EV chargers, and nearly 900 new chargers are coming online per week.
6. China's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are set to fall in 2024 and could be facing structural decline, due to record growth in the installation of new low-carbon energy sources, according to Carbon Brief.
7. Zijin Mining yesterday estimated its annual copper output in 2023 to exceed 1 million tons, making it the first Chinese mining firm to make the breakthrough. Its gold output likely rose 20% to 67 tons in 2023 from the year before.
8. Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech and car maker Chery Automobile are teaming up in the field of passenger cars and commercial vehicles to develop the new energy vehicle market, The Paper reported yesterday.
9. China's 1st grid-connectible MW-level airborne wind energy demonstration project has successfully generated electricity in E China's Anhui. With an installed capacity of 2×2.4MW, the project that harvests wind energy at 500-3,000m high boosts China's renewable energy development.
10. The Saudi Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources has formalized collaborations in the mining sector by signing memorandums of understanding with four countries during the third international ministerial roundtable. The MoUs include agreements for cooperation in the field of mineral wealth with Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Morocco's Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and Congo's Ministry of Mines of the Democratic Republic.
