1. Tongwei Group, the world's largest producer of solar silicon, said it has agreed to supply 1.18 GW of large-size modules to ACWA Power, a leading Saudi Arabian developer, investor, and operator of power generation, renewable energy, and desalinated water plants. The modules will be used at ACWA Power's Muwyah solar project, helping it generate around 1.63 billion kWh of clean electricity a year once it goes live, likely cutting carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1.54 million tonnes, Tongwei announced late yesterday.
2. Nio's second car brand, Onvo, targets the mainstream mass-market segment, complementing rather than competing with Nio’s main brand, which focuses on the premium end, according to the chief executive officer of the Chinese electric vehicle startup.
3. BYD yesterday announced its foray into the Kenyan market after partnering with local motor dealer Loxea Kenya for distribution, Xinhua reported. The Chinese NEV giant will sell the Atto 3, as well as Seal and Dolphin models to Kenyan consumers.
4. The head of China's powerful state planner met Ola Kallenius, chairman of the management board of Mercedes-Benz in Beijing, according to Reuters on Friday. It hoped that Mercedes-Benz would play an active role in providing a good environment for co-operation between China and the EU in the auto sector, Zheng Shanjie, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, said in a statement.
5. Tesla has further extended the 5-year 0-interest loan it offers in China, making this car-buying incentive, which began in April, essentially the norm. Information on the US electric vehicle maker's China website shows that customers who buy some variants of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover before October 31 will still be able to take advantage of a “limited time” 5-year 0 percent interest finance program.
6. Powerchina has switched on a 100 MW solar tower in South Africa. The concentrated solar power project will supply 480 GWh of clean energy to the country’s power grid each year. The system’s molten salt storage enables 12 hours of full-load operation.
7. CATL has launched a new 376 kW/752 kWh product expanding its TENER energy storage series in response to logistics and geospatial challenges facing energy storage products in Europe. The new solution integrates with both string and central inverters, meeting the needs of both large-scale commericial and industrial as well as distributed generation applications.
8. China's first self-driving heavy-haul freight train completed a trial operation in Cangzhou, north China's Hebei on Thursday. The train with 108 carriages reached a total weight of 10,800 tonnes during the test.
9. Australia and China agreed to cooperate further on investment, trade and decarbonisation, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on Friday during a rare visit to Beijing where he praised the recent stimulus packages announced by China. Australia's vast iron ore exports, most of which are sold to China and sensitive to changes in demand in the world's second-biggest economy, are an important source of government revenue.
10. Liquidators of the electric vehicle arm of debt-laden China Evergrande are still in talks with a potential buyer to take a stake in the company with a view to providing a new credit line to support production, according to Reuters.
