1. The world's largest clean energy corridor, consisting of 6 mega hydropower stations on China's longest river Yangtze, generated over 52 billion kWh of electricity in Q1 2024, equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by over 15 million tonnes, according to latest data.
2. The Panlong Pumped Storage Power Station in Chongqing, the first in SW China with an installed capacity of over 1 mln kW, began full operation Thur with its four 300,000-kW units. It can generate over 2 bln kWh of electricity annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 398,700 tonnes.
3. Around 20% of all-electric cars sold across the EU in 2023, or 300,000 units, were made in China. Over half of them come from Western carmakers, such as Tesla & BMW, which produce them in China for export, data from the European Federation for Transport and Environment showed.
4. Algeria is close to signing a deal with U.S. oil and gas giant Chevron Corp. as the OPEC member aims to increase natural gas exploration and production and remain a key supplier of the fuel to Europe. State-run energy firm Sonatrach will ink the agreement to develop a large oil and gas field "within the next few days," Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab said in an interview with state TV late Wednesday.
5. Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with President of the UAE Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Beijing on Thursday. Xi noted that the UAE is an important comprehensive strategic partner of China. In recent years, China-UAE relations have maintained a sound momentum of development, setting a good example for China-Arab states relations in the new era.
6. French automaker Renault and Chinese partner Geely announced a highly anticipated joint venture on Friday that will develop combustion and hybrid engines, hoping to improve the competitiveness of their legacy auto business. The venture is aimed at developing more efficient gasoline engines and hybrid systems, as rival automakers ramp up investment in low-emission powertrains in response to slowing electric vehicle sales.
7. Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motor is reportedly closing its European headquarters in Munich, Germany. Great Wall will shut down its European HQ on Aug. 31 and lay off all 100 employees working there because of the tough market conditions and the threat of European tariffs on Chinese imports, German media Manager Magazin reported on May 28.
8. Pakistani officials and experts are of the view that the country needs to collaborate with China under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to expedite green transition, promoting low-carbon development and countering adverse impacts of climate change.
9. Tesla won a first trial against a female owner who protested at the April 2021 Shanghai auto show, marking an important development in a lawsuit that has lasted three years. The Shanghai Qingpu District People's Court issued a first-instance verdict on May 30, requiring the owner -- Ms. Zhang -- to issue a public apology and compensate Tesla for damages totaling RMB 172,275 ($23,810), local media outlet The Paper reported today.
10. Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), located in east China's Jiangsu Province, has begun offering one-stop services incorporating the verification of carbon reduction, carbon trading and certification of carbon neutrality to businesses operating in the park.
