1. China saw the export value of auto-related products to Belt and Road Initiative partner countries grow 43.6% YoY to $117.1 bln in 2023, with over 3.42 mln automobiles shipped to these countries, up 62.8% YoY, accounting for 65.7% of China's total vehicle exports, according to customs data.
2. Chinese Premier Li Qiang recently signed a State Council decree introducing new rules on carbon emissions trading, Xinhua reported yesterday. The regulations, effective May 1, aim to provide a legal framework for the operation of China's carbon emissions trading market and ensure the effectiveness of related policies. China aims to peak CO2 emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
3. Former US President Donald Trump said he might impose a tariff on Chinese goods of more than 60% if elected, signaling an increasingly hawkish tone against the top supplier of goods to the US.
4. After joining Leapmotor as the advisor to the chairman for about seven months, Toyota China's ex-VP Godfrey Tsang reportedly resigned in December for personal reasons. Leapmotor's President Wu Baojun stepped down last month.
5. Chinese handset giant Xiaomi's first electric vehicle, the SU7, has begun road tests across China for final preparations before hitting the market, according to Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi. Lei said so on Weibo on Feb. 3 that he will put more focus on the auto business, while President Lu Weibing will step in as general manager of the Xiaomi brand, focusing on brand development and speaking at press conferences for new smartphone releases.
6. China's 1st LNG cold energy aquaculture demonstration project harvested the 1st batch of 1,000 kg of sea products on Sat in S China's Shenzhen. The project reuses seawater cooled during LNG vaporization & distribution, which can save 1.97 mln kWh of electricity usage per year.
7. JA Solar and Shanghai Jiao Tong University signed an agreement for jointly establishing a new energy materials joint research center, which will focus on the key materials needed for the new energy industry development.
8. BYD has teamed up with Raízen Power to drive sustainable electric mobility forward in Brazil. The two sides plan to build EV charging hubs across eight major Brazilian cities.
9. China has remained Africa's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years, with bilateral trade reaching a record $282.1B in 2023.
10. In 2023, of the $2.8 trillion that was invested in the global energy sector, $1 trillion went to fossil fuels—85% for oil and gas production. However, $1.7 trillion was invested in clean energy—renewables, nuclear energy, grid security and development, energy storage, low-emission fuel, and energy efficiency for end-use and electrification according to the International Energy Agency's most recent, World Energy Investment.
