1. BYD yesterday announced a cooperation with Qatar's dealer MANNAI CORPORATION, aiming to introduce NEVs in Qatar and support Qatar's 2030 vision for a greener and more sustainable future.
2. On February 5th, the Peruvian National Institute for the Defense of Free Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) conditionally approved the acquisition of two Peruvian subsidiaries of Enel that provide power distribution and advanced energy services by China Southern Power Grid International (HK) CO., Limited. Enel had signed the agreement with CSPGI HK in April of last year, with the total acquisition consideration being approximately US$2.9 billion.
3. NIO Capital has completed the second financing for its yuan-denominated fund, which is now worth CNY3 billion (USD418 million), the investment arm of Chinese NEV startup NIO announced yesterday. The proceeds of this round will be invested in NEV industry ecology, energy transition, and smart manufacturing.
4. Based on the data from China's General Administration of Customs, in December 2023, China imported auto parts worth US$3.01 billion. This represents an increase of 5% compared to the previous month and a 9.1% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. For the year 2023, China's total auto parts imports amounted to US$29.84 billion, showing a YoY decrease of 12.4%.
5. The Chongqing-based carmaker Seres saw a 654% YoY growth in NEV sales in Jan, mainly driven by AITO-branded vehicles. Of the total 36,838 units sold last month, 32,973 featured the AITO marque developed in collaboration with Huawei.
6. According to the China Coal Industry Association, data from the National Bureau of Statistics recently showed that in 2023, China's raw coal output above designated size reached 4.66 billion tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.9%, setting a record high.
7. Japan's Toyota Motor, raised its full-year operating profit forecast by nearly 9% on Tuesday, after its third-quarter earnings raced past analysts' estimates thanks to a weaker yen and strong sales of high-margin cars and hybrid vehicles.
8. China was home to the vast majority of the world's new coal power plants last year as it sought to bolster energy security, even as many other governments push to phase out the fuel. China accounted for 96% of new coal power construction, 81% of newly announced projects, and 68% of generators coming online, according to data released Tuesday by Global Energy Monitor.
9. Chinese scientists have developed flexible silicon heterojunction solar cells thinner than an A4 paper, with thicknesses of 57-125 μm and a record-breaking power-to-weight ratio of 26.81% through wafer thinning, which opens a wider range of application scenarios.
10. UK supermajor BP surpassed expectations with an underlying replacement cost profit of $2.99 billion for the last quarter of 2023, outperforming the consensus forecast by $220 million.
