1. China's BYD posted a 21% rise in second-quarter electric vehicle sales, closing the gap with Tesla after handing back the world's top EV vendor title to the U.S. rival in the first quarter. BYD sold 426,039 EVs in the April-June quarter, according to Reuters' calculations based on its monthly sales reports. That's around 12,000 vehicles fewer than Tesla's vehicle deliveries estimated for the second quarter.
2. China's 1st comprehensive green-designed offshore oilfield began operations Monday in S China's Beibu Gulf. The oilfield cluster, designed to reduce 44,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, is estimated to achieve peak production of 18,100 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2026.
3. Tesla on Tuesday reported a smaller-than-expected 5% drop in vehicle deliveries in the second quarter, as the electric carmaker's price cuts and incentives helped mitigate cooling demand. Shares of the world's most valuable automaker rallied more than 10% on Tuesday, hitting the highest level in nearly six months.
4. Constructed through collaboration between China's energy giant, State Power Investment Corporation Limited, and Kazakh firms, the 100-MW Zhanatas wind farm was put into operation in June 2021, becoming one of Central Asia's largest wind farms. By the end of 2022, the wind farm had generated an impressive 750 million kWh of electricity, greatly supporting power security in southern Kazakhstan.
5. EU countries are wavering over whether to back additional tariffs on Chinese-built electric vehicles, highlighting Brussels' challenge in building support for its largest trade case yet as Beijing threatens wide-ranging retaliation. Germany, whose carmakers made a third of their sales last year in China, wants to stop the tariffs, according to Reuters citing a government source, while France has been among the firmest backers.
6. With CEEC as its investor and constructor, the 1 GW solar PV project in Uzbekistan is now fully functional. This project, the largest of its kind funded and built by Chinese companies in Central Asia, includes 500 MW plants in both the Bukhara and Qashqadaryo regions.
7. The 7th meeting of the China-Kazakhstan Entrepreneurs Committee was held in Astana, Kazakhstan on Tuesday. Representatives from the business communities of China and Kazakhstan conducted in-depth discussions on topics in the meeting such as energy transformation, food security, connectivity, infrastructure, and the development of SMEs. Representatives of Chinese and Kazakh companies signed 44 cooperation projects or letters of intent.
8. Germany's VDA auto association urged the European Commission to drop its planned tariffs on China-made electric vehicles on Wednesday, in a last-ditch effort to influence negotiations ahead of the tariffs kicking in on Thursday. The association highlighted that the tariffs were hurting European and U.S. carmakers exporting from China and that the risk of retaliation by China with counter-tariffs would hit the German industry hard given its high volume of exports to China.
9. China imported 271,000 vehicles for a total value of USD15.1 billion in the first five months of the year, down 4.5% and 15.5%, respectively, according to the CAAM. In May, the number of imported vehicles to China totaled 63,000 units, up 7.4% from a year ago and 22% from April.
10. A group of researchers led by the Zhejiang University of Technology in China have utilized two sulfone-based organic molecules known as diphenylsulfone (DPS) and 4,4′-dimethyldiphenylsulfone (DMPS) to passivate absorber defects in perovskite solar cells. The result is a device with a higher electron cloud density at the interface between the perovskite material and the passivation layer.
