1. Botswana Power Corporation signed a power purchase agreement with Sinotswana Green Energy, a consortium of Chinese and Botswana companies, to officially launch the southern African country's first 100 MW solar photovoltaic power station project.
2. Power generation by China's major electricity production enterprises totaled 883.1 billion kWh in July, up 2.5% from a year ago. The output of hydropower and solar power increased 36.2% YoY and 16.4% YoY in the same month, respectively, according to the National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.
3. As the world’s second-largest economy, China has seen its gross domestic product (GDP) more than double over the past decade, expanding to 126.1 trillion yuan (about $17.75 trillion) in 2023 from 59.3 trillion yuan in 2013, with an average annual growth rate of 6.1%.
4. The rumor that BYD is mulling acquiring US carmaker Chrysler, including its Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep brands and eight of its US plants, is false, Li Yunfei, PR head of the Chinese auto and battery giant, according to Yicai.
5. China will restrict the exports of antimony (stibium) and superhard materials starting from September 15, according to an announcement Thursday. The announcement, issued by the Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs, noted that some antimony-related items and superhard materials can not be exported without permission.
6. Jiuquan in northwest China's Gansu has become the country's largest onshore wind power equipment manufacturing base, with an annual production capacity of 2,600 engines, 2,450 sets of blades, and 2,700 sets of tower barrels, local authorities said Wednesday.
7. Chinese electric vehicle maker Leapmotor saw gross margin move back above zero last quarter, while net losses widened as R&D investment increased. Leapmotor reported revenue of RMB 5.36 billion ($747 million) in the second quarter, up 22.62 percent year-on-year and up 53.73 percent from the first quarter, according to its unaudited financial report released yesterday.
8. Two made-in-China wind farm service operation vessels (SOVs), the 1st in Asia, were delivered on Friday in E China's Jiangsu. The pair, measuring 93.4m and 72.76m in length respectively, can sail at a speed of about 12 knots with a self-sustainability of over 30 days.
9. Chinese biodiesel producers are seeking new outlets in Asia for their exports and exploring producing other biofuels as supply to the European Union, their biggest buyer, dries up ahead of anti-dumping tariffs, biofuel executives and analysts said. The EU will impose provisional anti-dumping duties of between 12.8% and 36.4% on Chinese biodiesel from Friday, hitting over 40 companies including leading producers Zhejiang Jiaao, Henan Junheng and Longyan Zhuoyue Group in an export business that was worth $2.3 billion last year.
10. China and Saudi Arabia were the top destinations for Russian seaborne fuel oil and vacuum gasoil exports in July, traders said and LSEG data showed on Friday. Russian fuel oil and VGO seaborne exports last month rose 7% from June to about 4.05 million metric tons, helped by the completion of seasonal maintenance on Russian refineries. Russia's offline primary oil refining capacity for July at 2.5 million tons was below June's level by some 44%, according to Reuters calculations based on data from industry sources.
