Chinese solar stocks rallied after local media reported that teams from SpaceX and Tesla Inc. had visited domestic companies, buoying sentiment.
Jinko Solar Co. jumped by the daily limit of 20% in Shanghai, while Trina Solar Co. gained as much as 12%. Industry bellwether LONGi Green Energy Technology Co. also rose.
Optimism in the sector is fueled by speculation of a potential collaboration between local solar product makers and the US aerospace and artificial intelligence company owned by Elon Musk. Several reports confirming visits by SpaceX's team to Chinese firms further lifted sentiment.
"We are pivoting to a positive stance on solar equipment names," Dennis Ip, analyst at Daiwa Capital Markets Hong Kong Ltd., wrote in a recent note, saying that "most players confirm that Elon Musk's team has contacted them for potential equipment procurement."
Local media Cailian earlier reported that the SpaceX team signed an order with a leading domestic solar cell equipment maker, citing several supply chain sources.
Jinko Solar has been visited by a team sent by Musk, 21st Century Business Herald reported.
In a separate report, Jiemian said TCL Zhonghuan Renewable Energy Technology Co. and Zhejiang Jingsheng Mechanical & Electrical Co. were also among firms that met with Musk's team last week.
