1. China's exports of marine fuel oil fell 32% in March from a year earlier to 1.32 million metric tons, data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Saturday. The exports are measured mostly by sales from bonded storage for vessels plying international routes. The March volume was 12% higher than the 1.17 million tons shipped out in February.
2. Russia's coal shipments to China fell 21% in March dragged down by sanctions and import tariffs, customs data showed on Saturday. China's coal shipments from Russia fell to 6.92 million metric tons in March, its General Administration of Customs said.
3. U.S. President Joe Biden's push to triple tariffs on Chinese steel imports strikes a mostly symbolic blow on an industry facing bigger concerns over faltering local demand and threats of even stronger blowback against China's surging exports. Steel consumption in the world's second-largest economy is poised to shrink again this year as a protracted property crisis has yet to find bottom and as infrastructure demand growth slows after 12 indebted regions were ordered to halt certain projects.
4. Li Auto today announced price cuts across its entire lineup by CNY18,000 to CNY30,000 (USD2,480 to USD4,140) following Tesla's aggressive price reduction in China. Rival Xpeng said on April 20 it launched a CNY500 million (USD69 million) car purchase cash subsidy until May 5.
5. China's crude oil output posted steady growth in Q1 2024, totaling 53.48 million tonnes, up 2.3% YoY; the country's crude oil imports stood at 137.36 million tonnes over the same period, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
6. With a max altitude of 5,193 m, the world's highest-altitude wind power project saw its first wind turbine successfully hoisted Sat in SW China's Xizang. Located 140 km from Mt Qomolangma, the project uses 40 such turbines that can each generate 5,000 kWh of electricity per hour.
7. China's natural gas output hit a record high in Q1 2024, expanding 5.2% YoY to 63.2 billion cubic meters. The country's natural gas imports reached 32.79 million tonnes in the same period, up 22.8% YoY, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed.
8. China's commercial vehicle sales rose 10.1% YoY in Q1 2024 with 1.03 million units sold, including 919,000 trucks. The country's commercial vehicle exports soared 27.5% YoY to reach 214,000 units in the same period: China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
9. China's self-propelled floating revolving crane ship Zhongtian 39 was delivered in east China's Jiangsu. The 215-m-long, 51.8-m-wide ship boasting a large crane with a fixed stern lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes takes the lead in offshore wind farm construction in the country.
10. China has started the mass production of carbon-14 isotope through the use of a commercial nuclear reactor at Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, announced its operator on Saturday. With an annual production capacity projected to reach 150 curies of carbon-14, the project is expected to fully meet domestic demand.
