1. China's Xizang sees booming new energy vehicles (NEVs) export, with a total of 1,623 units recorded in Q1 2024, an increase of over sixfold YoY. All of the homegrown NEVs were sold to Nepal, of which sedans and small passenger cars accounted for over 90%: local customs.
2. China has restored over 100 million mu (about 6.7 million hectares) of land under the Shan-Shui Initiative, a massive ecological remediation drive aiming to restore 10 million hectares of natural spaces in the country by 2030, including mountains, forests, grasslands & waterways.
3. China announced on Monday its technically recoverable oil and gas reserves through the end of 2023. The reserves include 3.85 billion tonnes of oil, up 1% YoY, 6.68 trillion m3 of natural gas, up 1.7% YoY, and 551.61 billion m3 of shale gas.
4. Saudi oil giant Aramco said on Monday it is in talks to acquire a 10% stake in China's Hengli Petrochemical. The deal is said to align with Aramco's strategy to expand its downstream presence in key markets, advance its liquids-to-chemicals program, and secure long-term crude oil supply agreements.
5. Changan Auto's NEV unit Deepal today joined hands with NIO to let the former's 200,000 car owners access to NIO's over 20,000 charging piles from May. Carmakers including SAIC Motor, Geely Auto and Baidu-backed Jiyue have collaborated with NIO Power.
6. The China-built 220-MW photovoltaic power plant in Biskra Province, Algeria kicked off construction on Monday. The power plant, expected to be completed in 16 months, will create more than 600 jobs during its construction phase and bolster the region's electrical grid.
7. Chinese lawmakers on Tuesday started deliberating a draft atomic energy law that aims to promote sound and sustainable development of atomic energy industry. The draft was submitted to an ongoing session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for a first reading.
8. Saudi Aramco's chief executive has praised China's contribution to helping the west hit its net zero targets as the world's largest oil producer strengthens commercial ties with Beijing. Speaking at World Energy Congress on Monday, Amin Nasser defended China against the accusations that it was "dumping" cheap solar panels and electric vehicles on Europe.
9. Electric car sales will rise strongly in 2024 despite economic headwinds in some markets, the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecast on Tuesday, but affordability and charging infrastructure will be key to future growth. Electric car sales will hit 17 million this year, compared to 14 million in 2023, with more than one in five cars sold globally set to be electric, undercutting oil demand for road transport.
10. With a total length of 119.8 meters, the world's largest pure electric container ship docked at Shanghai's Yangshan Port today. It's expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2,362 tons per year. It will commute regularly between Yangshan Port and Nanjing, the capital of neighboring Jiangsu Province.
