1. The European Commission is working on tighter rules to ensure EU funding for hydrogen projects benefits European companies, after local industries raised concerns over cheap Chinese imports, the EU's head of climate change policy said on Monday. The EU will this month launch its next round of funding for green hydrogen projects, as Brussels attempts to kick-start a local industry to produce the fuel.
2. Sales of U.S. automaker Tesla's China-made electric vehicles grew 3% in August from a year earlier, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed on Monday. Deliveries of its China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles rose 17% from July. Chinese rival BYD, with its Dynasty and Ocean series of EVs and plug-in hybrids, posted a 35.3% year-on-year jump in passenger vehicle sales in August to a fresh monthly high of 370,854 units.
3. Asia's 1st deepwater jacket Haiji-2 and Asia's 1st cylindrical floating oil-gas production, storage & offloading facility Haikui No. 1, installed at China's 1st deepwater oilfield Liuhua 11-1, have achieved 5G network coverage with the construction of 5G base stations completed.
4. Changqing oilfield, China's largest oil-and-gas field, has produced over 1 billion tons of oil equivalent of crude oil & natural gas, with its annual output achieving over 50 million tons for 11 consecutive years and currently accounting for 1/6 of the national total, according to latest data.
5. U.S. climate envoy John Podesta will visit China for three days from Wednesday to discuss climate change issues, the environment ministry said, as the world's two biggest emitters of greenhouse gas look to bridge gaps on issues such as finance. Pacts between the two have been key to building global consensus in the fight on climate change, but few analysts expect this week's talks to deliver much progress.
6. Tesla's sales in China logged their best month for the year so far in August, with the U.S. electric vehicle maker benefiting from brisk sales in smaller cities. Tesla said it sold more than 63,000 cars in the world's biggest auto market last month, a hefty 37% jump from July, but probably still down from August last year when it sold 64,694. While an encouraging improvement, its performance lags major Chinese rivals by a wide margin.
7. July 2024 saw passenger car and light duty vehicle sales decrease by 6% month-on-month to 1.35 million units. This decrease was driven by the EU & EFTA & UK, which experienced a 28% decline. Ireland was the only country in the EU & EFTA & UK region to experience a month-on-month increase in EV sales with the release of new registration plates in July encouraging the purchase of new vehicles.
8. Tesla plans to produce a 6-seat version of the Model Y in China starting in late 2025, having asked suppliers to prepare for double-digit growth in Model Y production at its Shanghai plant, according to Reuters.
9. China has launched a key open lab that will provide high-quality services for the energy industry and facilitate the application of meteorological research in energy exploration and exploitation.
10. China's new energy industry is thriving, with over 2 million related enterprises as of July 31, 2024, a YoY increase of 16.4%. From 2021 to 2023, the average growth rates of the number of wind energy and solar energy-related enterprises were 21.6% and 21.7%, respectively, above the overall average growth rate of 18.6% in the new energy sector.
