1. The United States could see a significant response from China following any U.S. tariff actions, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Monday ahead of expected new tariffs targeting certain sectors this week. Yellen, speaking to reporters after a broadband event in rural Fredericksburg, Virginia, said she and other U.S. officials had made clear to China they could reconfigure tariffs first imposed under former President Donald Trump to be more strategic, but that any changes would be narrowly targeted.
2. Brazil's demand for inexpensive EVs and plug-in hybrids has seen sales of Chinese autos swell eightfold in the country this year, cutting into Western automakers' hold over the market.
3. China-Germany (China-Europe) Hidden Champions Forum 2024 opened in Beijing on Monday, and more than 10 projects in sectors such as new energy vehicles, digital economy, and education and culture, have reached cooperation agreements.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on Sunday denounced the U.S.'s overcapacity concerns and national security fears surrounding China's new energy vehicle industry, calling it a typical case of trade protectionism. Fu Bingfeng, the CAAM's executive vice president and secretary-general, made the remarks amid reports of planned new tariffs by the U.S. on Chinese electric vehicles. He said that such protectionist and isolationist actions shouldn't be the themes of the NEV sector.
5. NW China's Qinghai Oilfield, boasting oil and gas production at the world's highest altitude, has seen its natural gas output top 2.2 billion m3 this year as of Monday. For 13 consecutive years, the oilfield has maintained a natural gas annual production of over 6 billion m3.
6. The world's 1st renewable energy flexible direct current power grid project in north China's Zhangbei has sent 30.16 billion kWh of green power to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region as of Monday since its operation began in 2020, which meets the annual power use of 8.2 million households.
7. On May 14, according to the latest data from companies market cap, Xiaomi Group became the 10th largest car company in the world, followed by Honda, GM, and Ford. Lei Jun previously stated that Xiaomi Motors' goal is to become one of the top five automakers in the world in 15 to 20 years.
8. China Media Group on Monday released a report on foreign companies' ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) actions in China. The report focuses on how foreign companies in China can fully embrace the new opportunities of Chinese modernization and take the concept of ESG responsibilities in China's sustainable development.
9. BYD plans to debut its first truck in Mexico, next door to the world's largest pickup market. BYD is set to unveil its Shark plug-in hybrid truck Tuesday at an event in Mexico City, the company said in an agenda alert issued ahead of the event. While BYD has said previously the Shark will be distributed globally, the automaker doesn't have any plans to sell in the US — the biggest single market for pickups — at the moment.
10. China opposes unilateral tariffs that violate WTO rules and will protect it's legitimate rights, said foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, in response to reports of potential new U.S. tariffs on China's strategic industries like electric vehicles and solar products.
