1. The shipping throughput via the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower project on the upper stream of the Yangtze River, reached a record high of 174 million tonnes in 2023, official data showed Sunday. The figure marks an 8.77 percent increase from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Transport.
2. Jinpingxi wind farm, China's largest high-altitude mountain wind farm has been completed at an average altitude of 2,210 m, according to China Datang. It has a total installed capacity of 1.1 GW and produces 2.6 TWh of green electricity annually, powering up more than 1 million households.
3. According to Jiang Lijun, vice president of the Chinese Renewable Energy Society, China has built over 400 hydrogen refueling stations, ranking first in the world in the number of hydrogen refueling stations, and 280 have started operations.
4. Li Auto became the top Chinese NEV startup last year, with a record-breaking 376,030 deliveries, a 137% surge from a year earlier, the Chinese NEV maker said yesterday. Nio ranked second and Leapmotor third, shipping 160,038 and 144,155 units, respectively.
5. Egyptian and Chinese companies signed an MoU recently to develop a massive 10-GW solar energy project, aiming to boost renewable energy capacity and reduce reliance on fossil fuels in the most populous Arab country. The deal, witnessed by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, was signed by Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority, the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, and China Electric Power Equipment & Technology Co., Ltd.
6. Geely said it sold over 1.68 million vehicles last year, up 18% from the previous year and exceeding its annual sales target of 1.65 million units. The Chinese automaker's December sales rose 3% to 150,500 units.
7. China's leading oil and gas producer, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), officially took over from U.S. oil giant ExxonMobil as the lead contractor for Iraq's West Qurna 1 oilfield on Monday.
8. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund emerged as the world's most active sovereign investor last year, boosting its deal activity even as most global peers including GIC Pte and Temasek Holdings Pte slashed spending. PIF, as the Saudi fund is known, deployed $31.6 billion in 2023, according to research consultancy Global SWF.
9. BYD will reward its dealers with CNY2 billion (USD280 million) after the Chinese EV and battery giant sold over 3 million cars last year, people familiar with the matter told Yicai today. Stores that hit the sales target will be given CNY666 (USD93) per vehicle sold.
10. China Three Gorges Corp., a Chinese state-owned power company, connected 3.48 GW of solar to the grid at seven sites in the final week of December. The projects include China’s largest floating PV plant – a 650 MW facility in Anhui province – and two PV plants with capacities of 1 GW and 900 MW.
