1. CTG's Rudong 800 MW offshore wind power project in Jiangsu Province, China's first and Asia's largest offshore wind power project utilizing flexible DC transmission technology, has surpassed 5 million MWh of clean energy production.
2. GAC Group is planning to expand offshore, aiming to sell 150,000 vehicles outside the Chinese mainland this year, GM Feng Xingya said. Its brands GAC Aion and GAC Trumpchi eye localized production in Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, he added.
3. The world's coal-fired power capacity grew 2% last year, its highest annual increase since 2016, driven by new builds in China and decommissioning delays elsewhere, according to research published on Thursday. Despite record renewable additions, nearly 70GW of new coal power capacity were commissioned across the world last year, including 47.4 GW in China, the U.S.-based Global Energy Monitor think tank said in its annual survey. Coal-fired capacity outside China also grew for the first time since 2019, while worldwide only 21.1 GW was shut down, the survey said.
4. Subsidy investigations started by the EU interfere with the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Europe, and China resolutely opposes them, a Chinese commerce ministry official said. The official, who was not identified in a statement released by the department on Thursday, believes the probes launched by the European Union so far are all aimed at Chinese new energy-related enterprises, which will seriously damage the confidence of its firms in carrying out investment and trade cooperation in the EU.
5. Chinese car manufacturing in Italy could force some tough decisions for Stellantis including plant closures, the head of the Franco-Italian group, Italy's sole major automaker, said on Wednesday. The Italian government has said it is talks with Tesla and Chinese automakers, including Chery Auto, to attract one of them to manufacture in Italy and increase national automotive output after years of decline.
6. World's 1st onshore commercial small modular reactor Linglong One started installing its digital Distributed Control System (DCS) Wed in S China. The DCS, comprising 2 homegrown platforms, will ensure stable operation of the reactor that can yield 1 bln kWh of electricity a year.
7. China Southern Power Grid Corporation announced that the installed capacity of new energy in China's five southern provinces and regions, including Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan, reached 145 million kW, accounting for 32% of the total installed capacity, surpassing coal power for the first time. New energy sources such as wind and solar have become the largest type of power source in the five southern provinces and regions, contributing about one-third of the actual electricity consumption in the social economy.
8. China's Mingyang Smart Energy has released its performance forecast for Q1 2024. The company is expecting to achieve a net profit that can be attributed to shareholders of listed companies, ranging from 250 million yuan to 350 million yuan from January to March 2024. This represents an increase of 476.2647 million yuan to 576.2647 million yuan as compared to the same period in the previous year, resulting in a shift from losses to profits.
9. Chinese home appliance giant Midea Group and Chinese new energy vehicle startup Nio have joined hands in several fields, including electric car parts. Midea and Nio held a signing ceremony yesterday in which they reached a deal to jointly develop electric vehicle parts, such as air conditioning compressors, electric drives, thermal management integration, and on-board refrigerators, the pair announced in a joint statement yesterday.
10. Shanghai will grant up to CNY1 million (USD138,200) in subsidies to both Chinese and international businesses that choose the metropolis as the base to launch their new products, open their first flagship stores in Asia and hold their first exhibitions, the director of the Shanghai Municipal Commerce Commission said today.
